Social Security Disability (SSD)
- Q: Will drugs or alcohol use impact my Social Security Disability Claim?
A: Drug and alcohol abuse can have a profound impact on your Social Security Disability benefits. On average seven out of ten disability applications and more than eight out of ten Social Security Disability appeals are denied if drugs or alcohol abuse is involved. You are under no legal obligation to report past substance abuse as this can be an excuse to deny your benefits. If you are filing a claim for disability on the basis of a mental impairment carefully consider whether or not you want to mention alcohol or drug use on your Social Security Disability application or on a Request for Reconsideration. Mental conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder have been linked to alcohol and drug use. While that certainly is a factor in your mental condition it is best only as a contributing factor to your disability.
