Economic Stimulus Package helps Social Security Recipients | St. Petersburg Social Security Disability Attorney

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus Bill) has been signed into law. Congress has authorized a one-time payment of $250.00 to most Social Security, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries. Additional payments to those who are eligible during November and December of 2008 and January 2009 will beging to recieve payment in early May.

The Social Security Administration (SSA), explains that payments will be distributed in the same manner that beneficiaries receive their usual payments (i.e, check, debit card, direct deposit), althought the payment will not be included in the same transaction of the regular monthly payment. Social Security beneficiaries should be looking out for two (2) separate payments during the month of May.

All recipients with special needs who receive both SSDI and SSI will only receive one (1) payment of $250.00. Those beneficiaries under the age of 18 who are collecting SSDI will not receive any payment. The Social Security Administration says, those receiving a payment do not have to worry about the additional income affecting their government benefits. The stimulus payment does not count as "income."

The Social Security Administration has created an online pamphlet describing the payments and providing additional infomation for Social Security recipients. To read more click here.
